Transferring DNS to HostMonster

What’s a DNS?

The Domain Name System or DNS is a system that stores information about host names and domain names in a kind of distributed database on networks, such as the Internet. It can be also known as a computer program running on a web server, translating domain names into IP addresses.

What basically you need to know is that DNS is the answer when you want to link your domain to your web hosting.

When will I need to transfer my DNS?

You will need to change your DNS registration when you are switching your web hosting services.

How do I change the DNS to HostMonster?

Assuming that your domain is registered with GoDaddy, here’s what you need to do.

Check out the hosting account information in the email you got from HostMonster. You should be able to find information on the ‘name servers’ of your account. Normally it will be something like ns1.hostmonster.com and ns2.hostmonster.com.

Memorize that number and go to Godaddy.

Godaddy homepage

Login to your account onec your are in and find your way to ‘Manage Domains’ > ‘Domain Control Center’ > ‘Name servers’.

On the prompt out, you’ll see three selections for your default name servers setting. Default Hosting Nameservers is for those who host their website on GoDaddy, Default Parked Nameservers is for those who parked their domain with GoDaddy, and what you want, is to select the Custom Nameserver here.

Godaddy homepage

The proceduer will lead you to a series of input box, where you will be inputing the nameservers (ns1.hostmonster and ns2.hostmonster in our example) that you memorized earlier.

Godaddy homepage

Once you are done, click ‘Go’ to save the changes made and you are done. The change of nameserver might take an hour or two to be completely effective so do not panic when you are not seeing your website showing up properly. In case you are hosting the website somewhere else previously, I would suggest you to hold the account live for a few days before you shut everything off and switch to HostMonster.

Further Details

Basically till now, I am happy with most of the things at HostMonster. Server uptime scores a perfect ten; the order page (when I first subscribed) is smooth and secured; and I have definitely no complaints on the features covered in their hosting plan.

The only thing that I wish they were better is their customer supports.

No doubt that HostMonster had been already doing a good job. They had their customer support team built in-house (but not sub the job to India ;) ); the guy who answered my phone is professional and friendly; the verification department answer my emails and solve my problems lighting fast.

However, as said previous, I am unhappy with their scam alert system and I believe something’s better can be done to avoid collateral damage to the customer experience with them.

Conclusion

All in all, I am glad that I picked HostMonster as my web host so far. They are definitely in my recommended web hosting list for my friends and family.

Do you host your website with HostMonster as well?

If so, why not share your experience with HostMonster as well at here. Go on, speak up and comment.

Can I use my mom’s credit card to order HostMonster?

I know I know, this title sure gives you some “LOL” (or duh?) session. But believe me, even if the question doesn’t bother you, it bothers a lot of many others.

Credit card

Kids (well, not just kids actually) nowadays can do lots of things online, and this of course include setting up their own website. But the problem is: kids have no credit card, how do they purchase a web hosting service?

The best answer? Use you mom’s. So there you go, it explains why questions like “Can I use my mom’s credit card” can be seen quite often.

Back to the question: Can I use my mom’s credit card to order HostMonster? The answer is YES, you can, as long as you have your mom’s permission.

What to do if it’s my kids?

Wow, guess you are having some smart kids! Now panic not, a web hosting service would just cost you less than $100/year. More over, I am sure that the money spent will worth every cent of it as long as your kids learn along the way. What you need to do is just to understand why do your kids need a web host and what they wish to do with it. Walk thru the ordering process with them if necessary (to ensure the info on your credit card is safe).

What to do if I’m the kid?

So you can’t wait to have your own website huh? Explains to your mom (or dad) why do you need a web host and tell them what are you going to do with them. Let them see things you’ve learned (and will learn) online to show them how fast the Internet world is expanding. If you’re starting your website for a good purpose, I am sure your parents will be very proud of you and well, hand the credit card over in no time.

HostMonster: Over reacting on scam alert?

You should be aware that I complain that HostMonster is oversensitive in term of scam alert by now at my HostMonster review. Many don’t get my point about “oversensitive” and I’ll explain further at this post, using my recent experience with their verification department as an example.

My HostMonster account got deactivated!

When HostMonster Secret Revealed was first started about a month ago, the whole website actually got deactivated for no reason at all.

I was totally stone!

And to be honest with you, it was totally driving me nuts.

Imagine you had just pay nearly a hundred bucks on the hosting services and the next day you found your hosting account banned for no reason given at all!

Communication with HostMonster customer support

So what I did was to hold my temper and submit a support ticket at their service center. Luckily the response from HostMonster was quick and I got this canned reply from them a few minutes later:

Dear Customer:

Your web hosting account for hostmonstersecretrevealed.com has been deactivated  (reason: suspicious activity on this account).
Although your web site has been disabled, your data may still be available for
up to 30 days, after which it will be deleted.

If you feel this deactivation is in error, please contact customer support as
soon as possible.

Calling the Verification Department at HostMonster

I was like “Call your verification department? What the heck?” I was like half the globe away from the States and the support guy are asking me to call them at MDT time.

Having no choice, I called them. The guy who answered the phone was very polite, but unfortunately, couldn’t solve my problem at all. It happened that the account re-activation task fall under another department named ‘Verification Department’ in HostMonster and heck, my long distance call to U.S. got transferred and the connection got cutoff before I can talk to the personel in Verification Department.

Thus, the mess continues and my website has to surfer a few days down for no reason. Long story short, I was finally able to connect to the right person at HostMonster Verification Department and re-activate my hosting account again.

Things got fixed finally

In the last piece of reply I got for them, they explained the reason of the incident and the solution. The whole drama ended a day after I fax in my credit card and identification card copies.

As part of our on going efforts to provide our customers with outstanding service, we have criteria that we use in determining if an account is legitimate. Due to the certain items contained in the account information, this account was flagged for a suspicion of fraud. For security reasons, this flag caused the system to deactivate your account. We apologize and would be happy to reactivate the account.

To reactivate your account please fax or email a copy of your government-issued photo identification and the front and back of the credit card that was charged. You can white out all but the last four card numbers on the card front.

You can fax the documents to 801-765-1992 ATTN: Verification or reply to this email with the attachments.

The system is designed to do this to prevent fraudulent accounts from being created.

Conclusion of the story?

I have been working with more than 10 web hosting companies (yes, using the same credit card and details) and I had never faced such issues (information abused) before.

I am disappointed to know that a reputable web hosting company like HostMonster will actually ask you to “verify the credit card information” by calling and faxing them. I mean… aren’t we doing business online? Why not get everything sorted out online? And heck, what’s up with this ‘information abuse’ claims where I have nothing to do with any sort of scam activity? Who’re going to pay for my long distance calls since this is not my fault? Why HostMonster isn’t doing anything on this to repay my losses?

Well, so there you go – my first rant on HostMonster. Fortunately, their services are so far doing good (in term of server uptime, disk storage capacity, unlimited domain hosting… etc) and the customer service is efficient.

But a fact is a fact: Although their hosting service is among the best, the scam alert is really over reacting and they really need to improve before they scare all their customers away.

Forum hosting at HostMonster: Possible?

Is it possible to host a forum on HostMonster? Yes.

Does HostMonster offers simple installation on forum script like vbulletin or phbb2? Yes.

Hosting a forun on HostMonster is simple. In fact I have a vbulletin forum running on them and everything’s doing well. Installing a forum on HostMonster is pretty much the same like installing WordPress on the host.

First, you’ll need to login to HostMonster cPanel.

Get to Fantastico or Simple Script whenever you’re in. Note that there’re two forum scripts available with Fantastico (phpBB and SMF) and three forum scripts available with Simple Scripts (phpBB, PunBB, and BBPress).

Take phpBB on Fantastico as our example, to select installation for phpbb forum, simply click on the installation link and Fantastico will guide you through the installation process. Fill up a few details like Forum names and URL; the installation process should be completed within seconds.

Simple as that. :)
