Advantages Of cPanel Hosting

Well, if this’s not your first time here, you should knew that I am a big fans of cPanel.

For newbies, cPanel is a graphical web hosting control panel that makes the website administration so simple and easy. It runs on Linux based systems, and provides users with efficient working with no loss of time. CPanel is accessed via 2082 and 2083 ports using HTTP or web page login.

Nowadays if you signed up your shared hosting account, most probably you’ll ended up using cPanel. Bluehost, Hostmonster, Hostgator, WebHosting Pad, Lunarpages… all these well known names are offering their hosting service in cPanel.

“But why cPanel?”, you might ask.

Long answer short, it’s because that cPanel is providing (in my opinion) the best service that users need. Why CPanel is the choice of most of the web hosting companies has many answers, depending on individual user’s choice, but in general here’s what I think:

  • CPanel provides easy to use interface.
  • The front end simplifies various operations, including, mail, FTP accounts, Web Stats, Backups, Sub domain configuration etc.
  • It supports Fantastico, that offers bundle of free and ready made scripts for users and hence much of the support’s burden from hosting company’s end reduces.
  • CPanel keeps Apache, PHP, and MySQL etc up to date.
  • Supports WHM [Web Host Manager] making the web hosting too easy, and best suitable for people with too many sites.

What’s good about cPanel?

You all know I’m a big fans of web hosting GUI cPanel. Following up on my previous post: Are you happy with cPanel at HostMonster? I would like to talk about the advantages of this web hosting control panel.

HostMonster Bandwidth

Many wonder what system is HostMonster using for its server bandwidth. Well, the quick answer is HostMonster uses the Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) system for their file transfer bandwidth.

In case you’ve never heard of it, the SONET system is a fiber-optic high speed transmission system made for digital traffic. Only with such system, HostMonster is able to provides such fat bandwidth for their customers.

A search on the Internet shows that HostMonster bandwidth is technically an OC-48 Backbone Connection, 48 times faster than a basic DS-3 or TS-3 network data connection. This is one of the fastest fiber optic connections found on the internet today. HostMonster Bandwidth also uses fast Intel Xeon quad processing servers for high speed processing of requests over the network. HostMonster Bandwidth also is supported by synchronized power and a 99.999% uptime guarantee for all web hosting accounts.

To wrap things up, here’s a quick glance on HostMonster bandwidth features:

  • Synchronous Optical Networking
  • OC-48 Backbone Connection
  • Intel Xeon quad processing servers
  • 99.999% uptime guarantee
  • Top bandwidth speeds in the industry

FTP account at HostMonster

HostMonster allows you to have unlimited FTP accounts/connections to the server. This means you can have virtually no restriction at all working on FTP file transfers – such like sharing musics and videos with friends via your host server on Hostmonster. Cool, isn’t?

Err, okay, so you’re a beginner and not sure what’s FTP. Well, FTP (aka File Transfer Protocol, or file transfer program) is the program and protocol which allows files to be transferred across the Internet. The FTP is also incorporated into WWW browsers such as Internet Explorer and FireFox. In layman term, FTP is a method to upload and download files to your web server (in our case, Hostmonster web server).

How to add a FTP account and transfer file via FTP in HostMonster

You will need a FTP account on your HostMonster account and a third party FTP program to access your files. As default, your username/password is the passes for FTP access. For example in my case, I can login to my FTP account using the username and password that I created when I first signed up with HostMonster.

You can also add a new FTP account (as Hostmonster offer unlimited FTP account) for your friends or families for the access.

FTP account is easy to be created and shown below is the ‘control page’ for creating FTP account.

Also, Hostmonster allow you to create an anonymonus FTP account where no password is requried for the login. This may be useful if you have files that you wish to be publicly available for download. However, you should be aware that allowing anonymous users to access any part of your system may be considered a security hole.

All the fuctions related to FTP can be found at your cPanel froun page, under category ‘File’.
